Of all the subjects in basic education, this subject was feared by most if not all students. I wonder who created this dilemma, we adherently experiencing every school year. If I would have given a chance to pimp a genie out of a magical lamp, one priority wish I would invoke is the abolition of this subject.
But so sad, there is no such this as genies or magic lamp. All we know is the naked truth, that this disciplined is a necessity for you to move on the next level of your study. I can compare it in a computer game entitled Plants Vs. Zombies , easy on start but get as the game goes on, the tougher it gets, but the crucial point is the final wave, so, crucial if you failed, you wont get to the next round.
After all that I’ve said, I am just referring to one subject, MATHEMATICS, many of us find this so difficult to understand, some of us believe that this is quite an obstacle.
But like an old military saying goes, “the more you sweat in training, the less you bleed in war.” The statement is either figurative and literal in the sense that when you are looking for the rational behind the irrational numbers your mind goes nuts as your brain grinds to blood.
But this year, it is quite an exemption, we have encountered a 5’2, about 140 pound mentor who helps me understood this gruesome subject in a very simple manner. I find it so amusing when he starts doing his lectures about his topic every morning, as a matter of fact, he is our classroom adviser.
This teacher, a bachelor and a native of san jose del monte, Bulacan is on of the pioneer teacher in this heckle school of a tyrant.
I wouldn’t like to destroy my story by centering an attention to an old bandit who snares our money and enjoyment for this entire year.
The mentor I am telling is no other that Mr. Mark Henry P. Nieto, his primary duty to us is to actively instruct students, create lesson plans, assign and correct homework, manage students in the classroom, communicate with parents and help students prepare for standardized testing in addition he help students prepare for graduation and college entry exams, while in elementary schools the mastery of basic skills is of paramount importance.
Sir Henry taught us that Those who do not appreciate math are those who do not understand what math is all about. That is why the nature of math desperately needs to be explained. Simply put, math is about solving problems.
Ever since there were humans in existence, there have been problems to solve. Whether the problems were over basic requirements like sustaining sufficient amounts of food or major accomplishments like constructing multifunctional homes, problems such as these remain with us to this day. The peculiar thing about problems is that they all have similar properties.
Everybody uses math whether they realize it or not. Shoppers use math to calculate change, tax, and sales prices. Cooks use math to modify the amount a recipe will make. Vacationers use math to find time of arrivals and departures to plan their trips. Even homeowners use math to determine the cost of materials when doing projects.
Basically, there are four avenues of education to pursue: universities, community colleges, trade schools, or the military.
Universities prepare students for highly professional careers. Math is typically a strong component of their curricular due to the extreme technical nature of these professions.
Community Colleges assist students to either go on to universities or learn technical skills needed for data processors, electronic technicians, law enforcers, mechanics, nurses, and realtors. Math is not as intense compared to the universities but is integrated throughout each program.
Trade schools teach students the science of automotive maintenance, carpentry, computer repair, heating and air-conditioning, plumbing, … Math related skills are integrated throughout each program.
Even the military puts their people through school after basic training. These military schools are making to trade schools. On the other hand, military officers, even though they must already have bachelor degrees, are put through further schooling after basic training.
Therefore, today as a student of Sir Henry, I do now have a new perspective about Mathematics.
